Al Jam’iyatul Washliyah, founded on November 30, 1930, in Medan, East Sumatra (then part of the Dutch East Indies, now North Sumatra Province, Indonesia), is recognized as one of the largest and most influential Islamic organizations in Indonesia. JIU provides a scholarly platform for the dissemination of high-quality research articles and critical studies written in English and Arabic. The journal focuses on the scholarly study of Indonesian ulama and their pivotal roles in shaping religious thought, social dynamics, and intellectual traditions of Muslim communities, both within Indonesia and in the global Muslim world. The journal explores how Indonesian ulama engage with classical Islamic heritage and respond to contemporary challenges through religious authority, intellectual production, and institutional involvement. It welcomes interdisciplinary approaches drawing from Islamic studies, history, sociology, anthropology, law, and philosophy.
